The Sox had a chance to clinch a spot in the playoffs last night, but were unable to get the win and suffer their first back to back loss last night. The Sox had Jake Peavy on the mound who looked unhittable early, but found trouble in the later innings. The Sox had lots of chances in extra innings, but were never able to get the go ahead to cross the plate. The O's scored in the 12th and the Sox were unable to rally to keep the game going.
Jake Peavy didn't give up his first hit until the 5th inning and at that point the Sox had a 2-0 lead. The Sox jumped on the scoreboard in the 1st when Victorino singled and then Papi hit his 28th HR of the season. After Peavy gave up his first hit, he ended up allowing the O's to tie the game in the inning. Wieters hit an RBI double and then Roberts hit an RBI double as well to have the game 2-2. The O's were able to take the lead in the 6th when Wieters hit a ground rule double to score Markakis. Sox 2-3. The Sox were able to tie it up in the bottom of the inning when Mike Napoli hit a leadoff HR. Sox 3-3.
Peavy pitched 7 strong innings and left in line for a no decision with the game tied. Breslow came out in the 8th and got 2 outs before giving up a single. Junichi Tazawa then came out and got the final out of the inning. Tazawa then pitched a scoreless 9th before handing the ball over to Uehara in the 10th. Franklin Morales pitched a scoreless 11th, but then the O's got to him in the 12th. Morales had the bases loaded with 2 outs and looked like he struck Davis out, but the ump didn't call the strike. Davis then hit a 2 run RBI single to have the O's leading 5-3. That was frustrating, but it was also frustrating is that the Sox got the leadoff batter on in every inning 9th, 10th and 11th innings, but they were unable to get the winning run across the plate.
Red Sox 3 Orioles 5 BOXSCORE F/12
WP: McFarland (2-1) LP: Morales (2-2) SV: Johnson (47)
