The Red Sox headed up to Canada to take on the Blue Jays for a 3 game series. The Sox just came off a series where they slumped and lost 3 out of 4 to the red hot Kansas City Royals. Last night's game was Ryan Dempster vs. Todd Redmond. Dempster pitched well, but the game got tied late and he would end up with a no decision. The Sox would head to extras and Shane Victorino would end up being the hero in the 11th inning.
The game was a well pitched game all around. The game was tied until the 5th inning when the Jays got out to a 1-0 lead when Arencibia hit an RBI single to score Lawrie. In the 7th the Sox not only tied the game, but took the lead. Ellsbury got an RBI single to tie the game and then Pedey hit an RBI single to take the lead. Sox 2-1. Dempster took the mound in the 7th in line for a win. Dempster pitched a shutdown inning in the 7th and he was done for the night even though he was only at 88 pitches. Dempster's line for the night was 88 pitches, 7 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 2 BB and 4 Ks.
Tazawa came out in the 8th and ended up allowing the game to be tied by giving up a leadoff HR to Arencibia. Sox 2-2. Tazawa has looked pretty much locked in since the All Star Break, but he still gave up the lead last night. Tazawa came back out in the 9th and got 2 outs before handing the ball over to Breslow. Breslow got the final out and we were on to extras. In the 10th, Papi hit a double which probably should have been a triple, but he spent a little too much time watching to see if it was going to go out. Gomes grounded out and the Napoli continued his trend of striking out every time he is at the plate. It seemed like they wasted a great opportunity. Breslow went back to the mound in the 10th and got 2 outs before handing the ball to the Sox closer Uehara. Uehara got an out and we were on to the 11th. Salty got a walk and then Middlebrooks hit a single to start the inning. The Sox had two outs when Shane Victorino came to the plate and hit an RBI single to score Salty and Ells. Sox 4-2. Uehara came out in the bottom of the 11th and had himself his usual 1-2-3 inning to notch down the win.
