The Red Sox lost the first game of the series and came into last night's game hoping to even it up. Jake Peavy was making his 2nd start for the Sox against the Royals Ervin Santana. Peavy has historically pretty bad numbers in Kansas City and he would follow that trend last night. The Sox gave him a lead, but before the 6th inning was over he had squandered it and had the inning in the hands of the bullpen.
The Sox gave Peavy a tiny lead in the 1st when Nava got an RBI single off of Santana. Sox 1-0. Peavy would give the lead to the Royals in the 2nd when he gave up a leadoff HR to Maxwell and then an RBI single to Lough. Sox 1-2. The Sox bats got the lead back in the 3rd when Papi hit a solo HR and then Salty hit an RBI double. Sox 3-2. The Royals would tie the game in the bottom of the inning when Peavy gave up a solo HR to Gordon. Sox 3-3. In the 4th the Sox took the lead again when Napoli broke out of his slump and hit a bases clearing double. Sox 6-3. We hoped that would be enough runs to win the game, but the later innings would prove that was not the case. In the 6th Peavy found himself in a boat of trouble. He gave up 2 singles followed by an RBI single and his night was over. Sox 6-4.
Drake Britton came into the game with no outs and 2 men on base. Britton walked the first batter he faced to have the bases loaded and no outs. Britton got one out, but then he gave up a sac fly and then a 2 run RBI single to have the Royals leading 7-6. Britton was done and Pedro Beato was in the game. Beato didn't make the inning any better. Beato gave up an RBI double and then an RBI single to have the Sox down 6-9. The Sox bats didn't have any more rallies in them and that would end up being the final score. Beato pitched a scorless 7th and then Breslow pitched a scoreless 8th, but the Sox lost this game 6-9.
