Sox Blanked by Moore in Series Opener

The Red Sox are probably playing the most important series of the season so far since the Rays have been surging and came in just 1.5 games back in the AL East race.  Brandon Workman was making his debut at Fenway and was up against Rays Matt Moore.  Workman pitched well and had a quality start, but the Sox bats were unable to get anything going against Moore so ended up with a loss.

The Rays took an early lead when they scored a single run when Loney hit a sac fly to score Zobrist.  Sox 0-1.  Workman threw over 30 pitches in the 1st inning, but then settled down after that and had a pretty nice outing.  Workman didn't give up another run until the 5th inning when it was Loney again who hit an RBI single.  Sox 0-2.  Workman pitched 6 innings and his line for the night was 103 pitches, 6 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 2 BB and 4 Ks.  Jose De La Torre came out in relief and pitched scoreless 7th and 8th innings.  De La Torre came out again in the 9th and ended up giving up the 3rd and final run.  The Rays scored on a Jennings sac fly to score Joyce.  Sox 0-3.  Craig Breslow came into the game to get the 3rd and final out.

As for the Sox offense, it was basically no where to be found against the Rays' Matt Moore.  Moore pitched a complete game shutout against the home team.  The Sox were only able to get 2 hits against him and one walk.  Moore basically dominated the lineup and notched his 14th win on the season.

Red Sox 0  Rays 3  BOXSCORE

WP: Moore (14-3)  LP: Workman (0-1)
