Sox Beat Angels Behind Doubront’s Strong Start

The Red Sox headed out on a west coast road trip and their first game was against the Angels CJ Wilson with Felix Doubront on the mound.  Doubront has pitched much better, especially since Buchholz has been on the DL.  Doubront would continue that trend and with some run support would get his 5th win of the season.

Doubront took the mound just after 10pm on the east coast and by the end of the 2nd inning he had a small lead.  The Sox took a 2-0 lead when Salty, who had never had a hit against Wilson, hit an RBI single.  In the 3rd Doubront gave up a leadoff triple to Shuck and then after Trout walked, he scored when Pujols hit into a double play.  Sox 2-1.  In the 4th the Angels tied the game 2-2 when Howie Kendrick hit a leadoff HR.  After that point Doubront was basically untouchable.  He retired the next ten Angels in order while he waited for his team to give him a lead.  The Sox took the lead in the top of the 7th when Gomes got on due to error and Victorino scored.  Sox 3-2.  Doubront took the mound in the 7th and the Angels finally got another hit.  Doubront got Hamilton to fly out, gave up a double to Callaspo and then struck out Iannetta.  Doubront was done for the night and in line for the win.  His pitching line is 97 pitches, 6.2 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 BB and 5 Ks.

Breslow came out and got the final out to end the 7th.  In the 8th the Sox padded their lead.  Nava hit a leadoff double and Ortiz came in to pinch hit for Snyder.  With first base open the Angels decided to pitch to Papi instead of just putting him on. That would be a mistake on their part since Papi smacked a 2 run HR to have the Sox leading 5-2.  Breslow started the 8th inning and after getting one out was pulled in favor of Junichi Tazawa.  Tazawa gave up a single to Pujols, but got the 2 outs he needed without any damage done.  In the 9th the Sox added another insurance run when Napoli hit a long overdue homerun.  It had been 86 at bats since his last HR.  It's just a shame the HR couldn't have been against CJ Wilson, that would have been perfect.  Uehara came into the game in the 9th and got himself a 1-2-3 inning to notch down the first win on the west coast road trip.
