The Red Sox took another game from the Rays making it harder and harder for them to have any chance of seeing the post season this October. Felix Doubront took the mound for the Sox and other than having a difficult 3rd inning, he pitched real real well.
Doubront showed why it is a good thing that the team didn’t shut him down a couple of weeks ago when he seemed to be tiring and struggling. Doubront did get the team in an early hole when he had the bases loaded with only one out. Dubi hit a batter and then walked the bases loaded. Doubront was clearly annoyed with the home plate umpire and felt he was not getting pitches. Doubront gave up a 2 run RBI single to Zobrist and then a sac fly to Longoria to give the Rays a 3-0 lead. After that though, Doubront hunkered down and kept the Sox in the game. The Sox got a run right back in the 4th with a Loney RBI single to score Ross. Sox 1-3. In the 5th, the bats kept at it and ended up tying the game. Iglesias walked, Ciriaco hit a single to get Iggy to 3rd and then Ellsbury hit an RBI single. Sox 2-3. The Sox tied the game when Pedey hit an RBI sac fly to score Ciriaco. Sox 3-3.
The Sox were able to take the lead in the 6th when Ciriaco reached on a throwing error and Lavarnway was able to score from 3rd base. Podsednik was thrown out at home, but the Sox still took the lead so I’ll take it. Sox 4-3. In the 7th, the Sox tacked on some much needed insurance runs. Salty hit an RBI single to score Ross. Then Lavarnway hit a 2 run RBI double to give the Sox a 7-3 lead. Felix Doubront was done after 6 innings and Clayton Mortensen was on the mound in relief. Mortensen got 2 outs, but then got himself in some trouble. Mortensen hit Pena with a pitch and then walked both Jennings and Upton. Bobby V came out to get Morty and replaced him with Tazawa. Tazawa gave up a 2 run RBI single to Zobrist. Sox 7-5. Tazawa got the final out and was out of the inning. Padilla was on the mound in the 8th, however he gave up a leadoff single and was immediately replaced by Craig Breslow. Breslow got the 3 outs and we were on to the 9th. Bailey took the mound for the 9th inning got his 5th save of the season.
