Josh Beckett pitched himself an absolute gem last night and walked away with a loss. This made it the 7th time in a row that the O’s have beat the Sox at Fenway Park.
Beckett was wheeling and dealing on the mound for the Sox. Beckett didn’t give up his first hit until the 4th inning. Beckett gave up his only 2 runs in the 6th inning. Beckett gave up 2 singles and then an RBI single to Andino. Sox 1-1. Then the Sox almost turned a double play, however Chavez was too quick to first base and Flaherty scored from third. Sox 1-2. Josh did get the double play he needed to end the inning without any more damage. Beckett continue to pitch with dominance only giving up one more hit. In the 8th, Beckett seemed to get a cramp in his leg and Bobby V and the trainers came out. He threw a pitch and waved them off saying he was fine. Beckett’s line for the night was 8 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 5 Ks. Padilla came out and pitched a scoreless 9th inning.
Unfortunately for Beckett, he got no real run support. The Sox gave Beckett a teeny tiny early lead in the 3rd with Aviles his a sac fly to score Darnell McDonald. Sox 1-0. The Sox had an absolute in the 7th to either tie the game or take the lead. The Sox had runners on 2nd and 3rd and one out. Unfortunately, Byrd struck out and then Aviles popped out. In the 8th, the Sox also had two runners on base, but were unable to get them home. It was so unfortunate to waste a start like that from Beckett, but that is just what the Sox offense did.
