Tigers Grab Final Game From Sox

The Red Sox were hoping for a 4 game sweep of the Tigers with Josh Beckett taking the mound.  Unfortunately, they’d have to settle for taking 3 out of 4 since Beckett, the bullpen and the bats weren’t able to get it done.

Beckett didn’t have his best stuff.  He seemed pretty hittable.  The good news is that Beckett didn’t give up any homeruns like his first start against Detroit.  However, he did give up a bunch of hits.  Beckett seemed to struggle through the whole outing, however he only really had one bad inning on the scoreboard.   Beckett gave up 3 runs in the 3rd inning.  Beckett gave up an RBI single to Berry to give the Tigers their first run.  He followed that with giving up a sac fly to Boesch and then an RBI single to Fielder.  Beckett would give up his 4th run in the 5th with an RBI single to Cabrera.  Beckett didn’t pitch well, however he kept the Sox within striking distance and pitched deep into the game.  Beckett’s line for the night was 102 pitches, 7 IP, a season high 10 H, 4 R, 1 BB, 1 K.  Beckett was followed by Franklin Morales in the 8th who gave up a solo HR to Young to put the Sox down 3-5.  Matt Albers came out and finished off the inning.  In the 9th, Rich Hill came to the mound.  He had easily his worst outing of the season.  With 2 outs, Hill allowed two runs to score.  He gave up an RBI triple to Fielder.  A triple from Prince Fielder…just think about that for a little bit.  And then he gave up an RBI single to Young.  Sox 3-7.

The Sox bats were pretty quiet against Scherzer.  Salty got on the board in the 2nd with his 10th HR of the season.  That was followed by an RBI double from Scott Podsednik.  The third and final run that the Sox were able to score was an RBI single from Salty in the 3rd which tied the game at the time.  Unfortunately, the Tigers took the lead and never looked back.

I’m still looking at this series in a hugely positive light.  We took 3 of 4 against the Tigers.  I’ll take it…and bring on the Blue Jays!

Red Sox 3  Tigers 7  BOXSCORE

WP: Scherzer (5-3)  LP: Beckett (4-5)
