Jed Lowrie and Kyle Weiland are headed to Houston for pitcher Mark Melancon. The move gives the Red Sox several options to choose from for a closer. Melancon saved twenty games for the Astros last year so he will be in the mix with Jenks and Bard to fill the hole left by Papelbon’s departure.
The move also signals that the Red Sox are confident that Iglesias will be the shortstop of the future. The re-signing of Scutaro gives Iglesias more time to develop in the minor leagues. Lowrie was able to fill in at multiple infield positions when he was healthy so Bobby V. will have to find a replacement utility guy.
