Yep, the Red Sox lost again. The last time the Red Sox won Jon Lester was on the mound and we hoped he would bring us a win again, but sadly…he would not. Lester was against Big Game, Complete Game Shields and so he would have to be his best to get a win…and he didn’t.
Lester once again struggled in the 1st inning. He threw 43 pitches to get through the 1st and allowed 3 runs to score. It was not how we wanted to start the game. Marco Scutaro hit a solo HR in the 3rd inning to have the Sox trail 1-3. Lester said after the game that he just didn’t have anything. Lester gave up another run in the third with a double to Rodriguez to have the Rays lead 4-1. Because of Lester’s mile high pitch count, he only pitched 4 innings. His pitching line for the night was 4 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 3 BBs and 2 Ks. Not good Jonny.
Mike Bowden took the mound in relief of Lester. Both of our long relief guys, Aceves and Atchison had been used in the previous games, so it was Bowden’s job to go in there and get some innings. Unfortunately Bowden didn’t even get a full inning. Bowden got two outs, but he also issued two walks and a single to load the bases. Bowden got pulled and Matt Albers was in the game. I think you can see what is coming next. Albers gave up a grand slam to BJ Upton and the Rays lead 8-1. The game went from within reach to “forget about it” within the first batter that Albers faced. Albers pitched a scoreless 6th, but the damage had already been done. Felix Doubront pitched the 7th and gave up a run to Zobrist on a sac grounder. Rays lead 9-1. Morales pitched a scoreless 8th inning and that was it for the Red Sox.
I’m really getting sick of writing up these losing game recaps, so if the Red Sox could win…for me…that would be greatly appreciated!
