Rays Beat Us Again, This Time In Extras

Sighs.  The Red Sox lose again, this time in extra innings.  We keep finding new and interesting ways to lose games.  I am happy to see that the bats came to play and that the Sox had a fight in them in the 9th to bring the game to extras.

Kyle Weiland was starting for the Sox since both Bedard and Beckett are on the shelf right now.  Weiland had some command issues in the first inning, however he battled through.  Weiland gave up a walk, single and walk to begin the game without scoring an out.  Zobrist got an RBI ground out to score the Rays first run.  Weiland got Damon to strike out and then a fly out to end the inning.  Having just one run score in that situation, not too shabby.

In the 2nd inning, the Sox bats got the run right back.  Papi walked and Reddick singled.  Lowrie ended up getting an RBI groundout to score Ortiz.  Unfortunately, in the 2nd the Rays got another run to lead 2-1.  With runners on 1st and 3rd, Jennings got an RBI groundout to take the lead.  In the bottom of the 3rd, the Rays got another run with a Kotchman sac fly.  Rays lead 3-1.

In the top of the 5th, the Sox got new life.  Adrian Gonzalez hit his 25th homerun of the season to tie the game 3-3.  Weiland was out of the game after the 4th.  His pitching line for the night was 4 IP, 82 pitches, 6 H, 3 R, 3 BBs and 1 K.  It wasn’t great, but it wasn’t horrible.  Aceves came out in relief of Weiland in the 5th.  Aceves did something he doesn’t do very often, he gave up a homerun.  Aceves gave up a solo HR to Kotchman in the 5th to have the Rays leading 4-3.  In the 6th, Aceves gave up another run on a Longoria sac fly.  Rays lead 5-3.  Aceves pitched through the 8th inning and settled down after the 6th.

In the 9th, with the Sox down 5-3 the Rays brought in their “closer” Kyle Farnsworth.  Scutaro was out, 1 down.  Then, Jarrod Saltalamacchia hit his 16th HR of the season to bring us within one.  Ellsbury came to the plate and hit a back to back HR to tie the game.  This was Ells’ 26th HR of the season.  He’s just 4 shy of having a 30/30 season.

Papelbon came out and pitched a scoreless 9th and 10th inning.  He only threw 16 pitches to do it too, 14 of them being strikes.  He was just a force.  The Sox went down in order in the 10th and 11th innings.  In the 11th, Daniel Bard took the mound.  He had just come off probably one of the worst outings of his career and this one wasn’t great either.  He gave up a leadoff triple, which probably should have been a double if fielded better by Ellsbury or McDonald.  Then, Bard got Upton to ground out to 1st.  One out, but that’s all he’d get.  Bard gave up a single to Longoria and the Rays won in walk off fashion.
