Blue Jays Take Win in Extras

The Sox came into Toronto hoping to get a win behind Josh Beckett.  Unfortunately, that would not be the case.  The Sox started the day a game and a half behind the Yankees and they need to do well in this series to make the pennant race still well…a race.

Beckett kept up his usual dominant self until the 4th inning.  After scoring two outs in the inning, suddenly Tito and the trainer surrounded Beckett.  He was flexing his ankle back and forth and just like that he was out of the game.  It was reported later that Beckett has a sprained ankle.  Josh said he fell in the bullpen earlier, but he doesn’t think that is what caused it since he didn’t feel anything in his ankle until the last two pitches he threw.  Beckett’s pitching line for the night was 3.2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB and 6 Ks.

Beckett was out and Aceves was in the game.  He’s been that lifesaver for the Sox once again.  There aren’t many times that your ace of the game can leave in the 4th and replaced by a reliever who can just as easily put zeroes up on the scoreboard.  Aceves pitched 3.2 innings himself and went into the 8th inning.  It was a pretty impressive performance.

In the 8th inning, Bard came in and got the outs that the Sox needed and the game continued on pitched 1.2 innings himself.  The Sox pitchers had not allowed a run to score, however the problem is that the Sox bats also remained scoreless.  The Sox had 16 men left on base throughout the game.  They got 7 hits in total, but were never able to get that timely hit to score a run.

Papelbon came on in relief in the 10th inning.  He caused a little bit of drama himself, but he was able to shut the door on the inning.  Pap gave up a hit and then walked two batters to load the bases.  However, Pap reached back and threw some filthy fastballs to strike out Adam Lind.

In the 11th, Dan Wheeler took the mound for the Sox.  He got the first two outs and then rookie Brett Lawrie came to the plate.  The rookie took Wheeler deep and that was the game.

Even with Beckett out in the 4th inning, the Sox bullpen gave us a real chance.  Unfortunately, the Sox bats just couldn’t get anything going against the Blue Jays pitching.  The Yankees won today so now we are sitting 2.5 games back in the AL East.
