The rain couldn’t keep the Sox from getting in the second game of their doubleheader. It was still raining mind you, but they played on anyway. Erik Bedard took the mound for the Sox and was still looking for his first win in a Sox uniform.
Bedard got himself in a wee bit of trouble in the 1st inning. He walked the bases loaded with two outs. However, he got himself out of said trouble and got Sizemore to ground out without any runs scoring. In the 2nd, David Ortiz hit his 27th homerun of the season to give the Sox a 2-0 lead. In the bottom of the 4th, the Sox scored another run on a Salty sac grounder.
Erik Bedard was pitching well and in the top of the 5th. If he got 3 more outs this game would be official and if everything held, he would be in line for his first win. Unfortunately, Mother Nature had different ideas. The skies opened up and before Bedard could score an out in the 5th, the grounds crew was out and the tarp was on the field. Poor Erik Bedard. I’m pretty sure he’s never gonna get a win while pitching well enough each time to deserve one. Bedard’s pitching line until the rain cut his outing short was 4 IP, 86 pitches, 2 H, 0 R, 4 BBs and 5 Ks.

The Sox went into delay for about an hour and when they came back the durable Alfredo Aceves took the mound. Aceves needed to get 3 outs and then he’d be the one in line for the win. Aceves got the 3 outs and then some. He pitched 3 solid innings of relief…giving up zero hits, one walk and striking out three. We can’t ask for better than that. In the 6th inning, the Sox added on another run when Jed Lowrie reached by error and then scored on a Salty double.
Dan Bard came out in relief in the 8th inning. He gave up a single to Matsui, but that is all the Athletics could get against him. Another scoreless inning in the books for Bard. Papelbon came out for the 9th inning. He had a 9 pitch inning where he threw 9 strikes. He was just on fire and closed the game out to give the Sox the win.
There was a lot of water yesterday, but twice it is DIRTY! The Sox now get 2 days off before the Yankees come to town. Enjoy the break boys!
