The Sox were having a doubleheader today in hopes of getting the two games in before Hurricane Irene showed up. Irene might not be here just yet, but that doesn’t mean there wasn’t a lot of rain to deal with.
Lester was on the mound for the Sox and looking for his 14th win of the season. The Sox bats gave him a quick 1-0 lead in the first with a Scoots double and then an RBI single from Pedroia. Lester gave up a solo HR in the 2nd to Brandon Allen to tie the game. The Sox gave Lester the lead right back in the bottom of the 2nd inning. Jason Varitek hit a 2 run HR and then Ellsbury hit an RBI double to give the Sox a 4-1 lead. Lester gave up one more run in the 3rd inning with a Coco Crisp sac fly, but that would be all he would give up for the night. Papi got a 2 RBI double in the 3rd inning followed by a sac fly RBI from Carl Crawford. Sox lead 7-2. The Sox added one on in the 4th inning with a Scutaro RBI single. Tek added one more run in the bottom of the 5th with an RBI single. All in all, a great game for Tek with a HR and an RBI single. After the 6th inning, the rain intensified and the game went into a rain delay. Lester’s pitching line for the night was 6 IP, 87 pitches, 3 H, 2 R, 2 BBs and 4 Ks.
Dan Wheeler came out after the rain delay and pitched a scoreless inning. They didn’t stay on the field long and went back into another rain delay. After over an hour of being in delay, the Sox went back on the field and Mike Bowden who was just recalled from Pawtucket took the mound for the Sox. It was still raining at Fenway, but considered to be a playable rain. Bowden pitched 2 innings and allowed a run to score in the 9th. Bowden was “this close” to giving up a grand slam to Coco Crisp in the bottom of the 9th, but instead it turned out to just be a very loud out as Reddick caught the ball on the edge of the warning track.
