Red Sox fans have plenty of ammunition when it comes to reasons for disliking the Yankees, and author Clay McKinney now gives you another one. His book, Pinstripe Defection, chronicles the little known story of how the Yankees flaked on a contract with a Mexican League team over a Cuban Player.
McKinney’s book follows the legal proceedings of a young Arkansas lawyer as he tries to take on the Yankees for failing to pay $500,000 to his client, a Mexican League team owner. The Yankees signed Cuban defector Michel Hernandez away from the Mexican League team with the promise to pay the money if he made their 40-man roster. He did make the roster and the Yankees never lived up to their end of the bargain.
The book reads like a John Grisham novel, even including a Southern lawyer, and gives you a behind the scenes look at the business of baseball as the case unfolds. The Yankees come across as bullies and spoiled in this book with Major League baseball being complicit in letting them get away with it.
With the multitude of baseball books recapping events that have been told over and over again, it is nice to have a book that focuses on an untold story. Mckinney book is well researched and includes information from the key players in this event, from the scouts to the Commissioners Office. Pick up a copy and learn more about the behind the scenes world of baseball and reinforce your distaste of that team in the Bronx.
