Lackey Steps Up, Bats and Bullpen Do Not

Lackey Steps Up, Bats and Bullpen Do Not
John Lackey may have been the concern for the Red Sox going into last night’s game against Oakland but he was not the problem.  After giving up a run in the first, Lackey settled down and only allowed four hits through six innings.   The Red Sox couldn’t get anything going against the A’s starter Anderson until the eighth when Ortiz singled through the shift.  Ellsbury came in as the potential tying run as a  pinch runner but was called out on a bad call in a strike ’em out, throw em out to take the wind out of Boston’s sails. (Terry Francona was ejected earlier in the game for arguing another bad call).

Dan Wheeler was pulled after giving up a lead-off double in the bottom of the eighth and Oki made his disastrous return.  Okajima allowed Wheeler’s runner to score and more, making the game far out of reach for the quiet bats of the Red Sox.
