A Tale of Two Becketts

Josh Beckett looked like he was on his way to a special night after striking out the side in the first inning.  He cruised through three innings and looked nearly untouchable.  Then the Yankees got to him a little in the fourth when Nick Swisher hit a three-run homer.  Beckett settled down again and looked like he would keep the Red Sox in the game until the wheels came off in the 6th.  His command suddenly disappeared in the sixth.  He gave up a lead-off hit, hit a batter, and intentionally walked the bases loaded.  He then walked in a run, gave up an RBI single, beaned another batter and before the inning was over the Yanks were up 9-1.  Beckett was perplexed by his sudden lack of command:

“Just had no idea where the ball was going. Hit Cano with a cutter and Jeter with the bases loaded with a sinker in. Tried to throw the ball too hard,” said Beckett. “I had an idea where it was going, it just wasn’t going where I wanted it to go. It just, when you try and overthrow like that your delivery gets all messed up. You’re not worried about execution, that’s what you should be worried about.”

The Red Sox offense had trouble getting hits off of Yankees starter Phil Hughes and couldn’t come back from the hole Beckett had dug.
