The 2006 World Series Scandal – Still Going?

ELI5 is a popular sub-Reddit.

It means ‘Explain It Like I’m 5’ and it hosts a bunch of interesting topics where people that are experts (or at least claim to be) explain things to everyone it the most simple way possible. Just like you’d talk to a 5 year-old.

These are some of the more popular topics being discussed right now. I’ve never gone on that board without learning something. But after reading this AM’s Post-Dispatch story on the (STILL!) ongoing saga of the cops versus the 2006 World Series tickets, I’m thinking about creating a post.

A refresher: Cops took tickets from scalpers selling them illegally. They then took said tickets out of evidence and let friends and family use them. They got caught. Officers were disciplined. ALCU wanted to know just how they were disciplined and sued to get records into the public domain. Court agreed. Appeals. Court still agreed.

Dead and buried, right?

Well it seems as some people aren’t done with the case. A group of officers are back in court fighting a the court order to release the records.

Mind you, these are the individual officers in court, not their union or the state. Yet they seem to be fighting not for individual gain, but for the protection of internal affair records?

The officers say they are not hiding anything that isn’t already known, but are concerned about setting a precedent in giving the public access to internal affairs records.

The American Civil Liberties Union, which sued for that access, says the public has a right to know how the government handles employees’ misconduct.

So names and punishments have been made public. But these officers are still taking up the global protection of records fight?

I’m just not sure why. Or what they hope to gain.

Seems like a weird hill to die on – protecting information about government officials that are under investigation for wrongdoing? Or am I totally misunderstanding the point of their continuing legal action?

The only big takeaway that I can stand firmly behind? Never wade into the comment section of the P-D when it comes to a police related matter. You’re automatically docked 3 IQ points.
