Player of the Game
Rajai Davis added a solo home run of James Paxton as an insurance run in the fifth, but Bauer didn’t need it. He pitched 7.2 innings and allowed just a single run, striking out ten while giving up just five hits. Considering his command and movement, this may have been Bauer’s best start of the season and given the results, it was at least his best since throwing seven shut out innings against Houston on May 10th.
Feathers Up
After Trevor Bauer allowed two singles with a steal between to score a run in the bottom of the third, the Indians came right back with two of their own in the top of the fourth. Carlos Santana started things off with a single, then scored all the way from first on a Jose Ramirez double down the left field line. While it looked like he would be thrown out at home, an error on the catch by catcher Chris Iannetta allowed him to slide in safely. With the ball heading back to the backstop, Ramirez was able to move up to third and scored on the following fly ball to right from Juan Uribe.
The Mariners brought the heat tonight, with both James Paxton and rookie reliever Edwin Diaz (making his MLB debut) hit triple digits on the RADAR gun. The two pitchers were certainly impressive, striking out 11 between them in seven innings, but the hit that counted the most, Ramirez’s double, came on a 98 MPH fastball from Paxton while Santana and Davis took advantage of a few of the rare slow pitches he threw. As little as it was, it was enough to piece together the Indians sixth win in a row.
Milestone Alert: With a strike out of Robinson Cano, his only batter faced, Bryan Shaw recorded his 10th hold of the season, moving him into third all time with 69 career holds, tied with Rafael Perez.
Feathers Down
Bauer didn’t allow a hit until the third, but when he did, he allowed two and it resulted in the RBI single from Nori Aoki mentioned above. Interestingly enough, he didn’t strike out a batter until the fourth, but when he finally did he struck out all three, stranding Kyle Seager at second after a double. He continued this in the fifth, striking out batters for five consecutive outs.
Final Score: Cleveland Indians 3 – Seattle Mariners 1
On Deck: The Indians have three more upcoming in Seattle and all will start at 10:10 PM ET. Game two will feature Wade Miley going against Carlos Carrasco in his second start since returning from the DL.
