The return of Yan Gomes is eminent, Indians fans. It’s been a long time coming and he is anxious to return.

After a short rehab trip to Lake County and now in Columbus, he will certainly be ready by next week to rejoin the big league club.

“It hasn’t felt like a month,” Gomes said of his time on the DL with a MCL sprain. “It definitely feels faster than what it’s been. The last couple days, we’ve had some busy days; I was just praying I wasn’t going to hurt or have any type of pain, and I was pumped when I didn’t.”

After observing his play Friday and Saturday night, it is clear that he is ready to return to action at the Major League level.

He caught three innings and had two plate appearances on Friday evening at Classic Park in Eastlake. Offensively, he went 2-2 with two singles hit to left field. His right knee handled the weight transfer and hip rotation into the ball very well. “It felt really well. Honestly, it was what I most worried about, stepping back into the box and having it feel good during the swing” Gomes said. He also did not have trouble getting out of the box and sprinting down the line. He had a quick first step and did not show any hesitation when rounding the bag.

Defensively, moved extremely well behind the plate showing no effects of torn MCL. In fact, he had no pain while squatting or moving laterally to catch balls thrown on the inner and outer half of the plate. He did not make any throws to second besides warmups that tested his ability to go from the crouch to the throwing position so that will be a little more behind than the rest of his body of work.

Gomes looked far ahead of schedule than what he should be. Usually a moderate sprain of the MCL to a catcher will result in a few months of therapy before resuming baseball activity. This is a testament to his work ethic and well-built body
