One Fan(n)'s Opinion By @RDotDeuce - My open letter to Rex

When most folks (myself included) ‘tweet through it’ during a Bills game, the emotions get raw and things come out that you don’t intend. So, in the interests of getting my point across, below is my open letter to Rex, asking what in the wide wide world of sports is going on at One Bills Drive.

Rex,

Buddy, what are you doing? I was wondering, because as the fan-club founder and president (circa 2005) I’ve been banging the drum for a while man.

I get that the season’s kinda going pear shaped, but a few weeks ago, during that Pats game you were all full of piss and vinegar screaming to high heaven about how your defense was here and ready to assert itself. I remember that defense you had in Baltimore – Lewis and Reed, Suggs, Adalius. Heck, I wasn’t mad when Deion had the pick six that became a Burger King commercial – I was more proud that that defense forced Bledsoe into getting Prime that look. But here in Buffalo, things have been weird and well, I’m tired of it.

From day one, your claim that 4th place was an embarrassment compared to your defenses (they’re 20th right now) and how you’ll be a bully to opposing offenses were music to my ears. However, the more you’ve talked this year the less you’ve put up on the field. To a maddening degree you’ve sent three man rushes against the most mediocre of quarterbacks. And each time they cut that defense to ribbons. Sure, you can’t tackle for Brown or Bradham in the Giants game, but you could’ve blitzed more? In the Jags game EJ melted down for a bit, but you could’ve forced Bortles into mistakes? And so on and so on. What is the issue?

In personnel, the rumors have been all about Whaley “going rogue” but why has this suddenly become the home for wayward Jets? Be it Mulligan, who wouldn’t (and isn’t again) be in the league if not for you signing him, or Harvin maybe retiring, (maybe not?) your shrewd record as an evaluator of talent is mind numbing. Further, your constant need to remind how much you wanted Tyrod, is countered by your neglect to change the fact that the best talent of IK Enempali has been punching the Jets’ ticket to a playoff bid.

At every chance you get to change the page on your choose your own adventure book of life, you are making the same mistakes you did in New York. Instead of bending and flexing, you’re more rigid, more my way or the highway. Why?

The sound bytes sound better from a talking head on TV, and while you won’t have any job security issues this year or next the whispers in the media about Whaley are too similar to the sources that cropped up during your debates over players with the Jets. Was Matt Cassel really that important to some of your staff? If so, can we identify and fire those guys, because boy howdy Cassel sucks. Has sucked. Will continue to suck. But hey, he’s a vet so…

Well, I’m running out of time here – I have other things to do and frankly this is draining. Either you’ll find a few hall of famers to make your defense work or you’ll turn into your brother (perfect timing having him in Buffalo as your secondary goes up in flames by the way) and the Bills will be the same as they ever were.

But at least you have a cool truck.

Happy Holidays,
Rich
