Barring any trades, the Bills have now completed the third day of the draft. Depth, a potential developmental QB and BPA were on the docket – let’s see how they fared! #OneBuffaNole

Round 5 (Pick 155) – Karlos Williams Sr., RB Florida State: Wait, what now? That’s right, now only did the Bills double down on their FSU players for the year, they’ve also added yet another Williams – though I’m intrigued to see if Karlos will add ‘Sr’ to his name as he did at Florida State. Williams is a beast of a runner as you’ll see below, making outstanding usage of his 6’1″ 230 pound frame. He spent his first few years at Florida State as a defensive back but finished his career as a running back, so he has a little room to grow. In year one, Karlos can contribute as a special teamer and perhaps steal a few snaps from whoever is left between Jackson, Dixon and (#HeGone) Bryce Brown.

Williams also unfortunately has some issues that the Bills had to research. First, being implicated in setting someone up in a drug related robbery; the second being involved in a messy domestic dispute in which the mother of his children feared FSU fan backlash. Though no charges were filed, these are questions that no doubt will arise during the post draft press conference with Doug Whaley and Rex Ryan.

Here’s some footage of Karlos in action…

Round 6 (Pick 188) – Tony Steward, LB Clemson: ACC all day apparently is the Bills new mantra (besides #OneBuffaNole) in the draft war room. The 6′, 230 pounder looks to fit as a WILB in the Bills’ scheme and this year contribute as a special teamer or practice squad candidate. At Clemson, Steward had 73 tackles, 10 TFL, 3.5 sacks and 1 pass breakup.

Steward’s knees bear watching – both have had procedures on them, which may have contributed to his lack of draft pedigree.

Round 6 (Pick 194) – Nick O’Leary, TE Florida State: The reigning 2015 Mackey award winner (best TE) that came in second on his team in receptions (48), yards (618) and TDs (6) and looks to fit in as an H-Back chess piece for Greg Roman. I am a big fan of his “peskiness” blocking – he might not be a mauler, but he’ll get after it and in motion he’ll be able to ‘get in the way’ more often than not with a defender. If you’d like a little more to read up on for Nick, Jenny Vrentas has a great piece up on MMQB.com.

Round 7 (Pick 234) – Dezmin Lewis, WR Central Arkansas: The 6’4 receiver had 64 receptions, 945 yards and 9 touchdowns this season, including this beauty:

Look. At. That.

To get a player like this to develop in the 7th behind Harvin, Watkins, Woods, Hogan and Goodwin is great for depth. Should he not make the team outright, having him as a practice squad player with the stacked roster allows him to develop on his own time, similar to former 7th rounder Stevie Johnson.

My Thoughts: Given the way the draft went, I was surprised the Bills didn’t pick up defensive linemen. However, with the opportunity to do so in undrafted free agency and the star-power at the top of the line I can understand. The choice of two additional Florida State players, one of which with more character questions was curious; but if their vetting process is as sound as Doug Whaley (and before that Buddy Nix) claim it to be, for their sake I hope trust isn’t misplaced in these players.

Next up for the Bills will be the 8th round – undrafted free agency. So far, according to NEPatsDraft, nothing to report. With the draftees, the Bills will have 14 spots by last count to reach the 90 man roster limit. If I had to guess, I’d say they will add a few more linemen on offense and defense for camp numbers, as well as a few more linebackers.

Once the La’El Collins situation is resolved, if found to be innocent they should JUMP at getting him in undrafted free agency.
