Thinking about quitting fantasy sports

Ryan Miller, Ryan Callahan

As you get older, you’ll realize that a number of things that you used to enjoy seem to become trivial. Maybe with getting more responsibilities as an adult or taking on father time or been there/done that, makes things you loved back in the day seem old and played out. I used to like getting wasted and going to clubs while trying to meet girls. Now…Yawn.

The thought of loud music and trying to go through a conga line of overcrowded bars makes me grab for the remote to watch Game of Thrones on HBO On Demand.

You also start downgrading your wardrobe at the age of 32. I used to spend a ton of money on clothes, now, I don’t even bother. Yes, I was one of those annoying kids who would blast my radio as large as possible from my car with my thousand dollar radio system. Just a complete waste of money.

Recently, I’ve come to the notion that fantasy sports have run its course and are extremely lame.

This is coming from someone who was addicted to the games for years. I was the guy who would harass my league in trying to make a trade. I would call my cousin at 1am while he was probably drunk and try to finagle a trade. I would get on the horn to the commissioner if I felt a trade was made that was completely one sided. I would wait until waivers were cleared at 2am and pick up someone who was just cut.

Hell, we had a family feud when my cousin was able to figure out the commissioner’s (His Brother) password and swapped a player out during the fantasy playoffs, which cost me the championship. We found out about this on Christmas Eve and if Christmas Carollers were around, we would have poured tar on them because of our moods being so fowl.

I was in like six fantasy football leagues to go along with two NBA, two NHL and two baseball leagues.

Now, I’m in like two of them and haven’t checked them in months. Yes, I’m that douche bag now who doesn’t update his team and has like 3 pitchers on the DL who are still in the starting rotation. I’m the one who gets trade requests through my Yahoo and I’m letting them go into the delete folder. I just don’t care anymore and I really don’t have any idea why. Maybe some of you who are older or in my age range, feel the same way.

It also has me thinking about how I know a number of older Buffalonians, who used to be diehard sport fans, couldn’t tell you what is going on with the local teams. Their interest has mostly gone downhill because of having kids, kids, kids and more kids. Is this where I’m heading when I reach my 40s? Will I stop caring as much if I have kids and bask in the glory of my couch instead of games?

I couldn’t tell you why my bar, wardrobe and radio habits have gone out the window.

Am I really that old?

I still know a number of 32-year olds who still live and die by those swords.

I guess this is where I tell you that all the previous escapades led to nothing really. I didn’t exactly grab the brass ring at clubs with women and because of that, my wardrobe didn’t exactly matter any more, did it? I don’t have a car any more and I’d rather listen to sports talk than music. What did all my fantasy sports teams lead to? You guessed it…not much. I had 1 title in like 8 years. I’m the Atlanta Braves of the fantasy world.

Is this what happens when you get older? We get rid of things we enjoyed so much when we were in our 20s because they are either boring or led to nothing? I still think I could get girls at bars and win a fantasy title, but the motivation and enthusiasm are gone and the conquest is just so tiring and isn’t worth the prize at the end. Either way, it seems to be a pretty crappy reason to change things.

I guess everyone was right, getting old really stinks.
