No, I haven’t lost hope for the series.
Hear me out. I know there are fans in WNY who will never embrace the series. I understand that. NYS tax payers are probably going to pay 100 million in stadium improvements for 7 games. The team is called the Buffalo Bills. Not the Buffalo Bills of Southern Ontario. The series can also be construed as a bridge to the Bills leaving town for Toronto full-time. In a region where being self-conscious is the norm, this series doesn’t bode well for Bills fans’ self-esteems.
However, this is what it is.
I know the agreement is up next year, but this deal isn’t going anywhere. I know some fans would love it to, but for the Bills to get almost double on their return for a home game, something will be worked out. Yes, it will probably be for a lower number than last time around, but I think this is the norm. Sure, it may change after Ralph Wilson dies, but as I’ve written before, whoever buys the team is going to be inheriting a lot of debt. One billion dollars will be the going rate for this team. The new owner could be desperate to make some money back.
Anyway, why haven’t I lost hope for the series? It’s called WINNING.
I wrote a piece a long time ago that said the Bills/Toronto series could work if the Bills were actually good. I still believe if we were the New England Patriots with Tom Brady & company, the games would sell out. Don’t tell me they wouldn’t. What if the Blue Jays of the early 90’s with Joe Carter and company, played 4 games a year in Buffalo? Sell out. Hell, I think they would sell out now. There would be interest because they were good. I think if the 1992 Bills played a game there, it would sell out.
Good football will sell in Parts Unknown.
If you were following Twitter yesterday, everyone who had a microphone, a notepad, or a pulse continued to b#tch about the Toronto series. It was either about the Internet connection in the press box, the speakers, or the food, pick your poison. However, when the game started, things changed. If you read Sully’s column this morning, the crowd was the loudest of any of the Toronto games. Alright, so it won’t be confused with a Guns N’ Roses concert, but it was a start.
Why?
Because the team was winning and had a decent record going into this game. I tweeted last week that the Bills had a combined 10-20 record when entering the Rogers Center. They only scored one offensive touchdown in the first two Toronto games. You can’t expect for Canadians to get up and dance over that.
If the Bills continue to win and get better, maybe get a marquee player or two, it could work. Yes, we will still complain about the game next year at this time. However, after the semi-cheers from yesterday’s game, maybe not all is lost.
As for the (716), we are The City of Good Neighbors. Toronto is our neighbor. Maybe we should embrace them more. The Canadians invade the Galleria Mall and Sabres/Leafs games like Napoleon invaded Europe. Maybe we should try and embrace the semi-partnership. Show Toronto that we do consider them a member of the Bills mafia as the kids are calling it today. I’m not saying we need to sing camp songs together, but this is what it is. Sharing our team? God, how a 5-2 start will change my cynic mindset.
Like a marriage, we are going to be in it together for years to come, so, let’s work out the kinks.
