The Bills added another linebacker on Wednesday with the signing of Kirk Morrison, a former third-round pick by the Oakland Raiders in 2005.
Morrison played for the Raiders until 2009 and played for Jacksonville last season. The signing of Morrison is also an indication that Reggie Torbor might be out of the lineup for a while. Torbor hasn’t practiced the last two days and the Bills might be bringing in Morrison as insurance. (The Buffalo News)
Mind of Joe
Kind of a surprising addition. The Bills seemed set at inside linebacker with Barnett and Davis as the starters. I also wonder if maybe Davis’ days are numbered, as he makes decent money and I’m not sure the Bills would want to keep him on the roster as a back-up.
I know some have pointed towards Torbor being hurt as a reason for the signing, but it just seems odd that they would sign Morrison as a way to offset the injury to him. I mean, it’s Reggie Torbor? You’d think they’d sign someone who sucks to offset the depth of Torbor.
I’ll be honest, but a tiny part of me wonders if this signing is about trying to shut the fans and the players up for questioning if this team is committed to winning. I know it’s just Morrison, but I’m just letting you know that it crossed my mind.
Anyways, I shouldn’t question it as Morrison is much better than Torbor and Davis. We all know you need as many linebackers as possible in a 3-4 defense.
A nice thing about Morrison is that he’s never missed a game due to injury and has started every game since week 1 of his rookie year. Morrison is a 6-year veteran and has 5 years of 100 tackles or more. The Bills now have three inside linebackers on their roster who have 100 tackles or more in a season. Morrison also had a career high of four interceptions in 2007 with the Raiders. However, his game seems to be mostly geared at being a run stuffer.
I’ll be honest, I needed this. I’m not saying this guy is a game-changer, but with all the news we’ve gotten over the last 10 days, it’s nice for them to sign someone. Hell, he at least made PFT.com’s top 80 free agents this year. Frankly, I almost jumped out the window after hearing about Dareus being on crutches, but with this signing, I may throw myself off out of a lower window. 😛
(FYI: I’ve already reached out to the Raiders and Jags sites on bloguin, to see if they could do a Q&A about Morrison. When they get back to me, I’ll have those posts up as quickly as possible.)
