The following post is about preseason football. I hate preseason football, and I hate training camp. It means nothing, but I’ll do my best to pretend I care. Otherwise, this post is meaningless. If you need a replay of my thoughts on preseason in general, here you go. Now to the post..
—My biggest concern tonight is whether Donald Jones is alright. They have to take hits like that out of the game. Rahim Moore delivered the hit as Jones was reaching for a high pass along the sideline. Moore appeared to be leading with his shoulder, but his helmet hit Jones’ helmet first, and Jones’ head slammed into the ground. Jones was down for a good five minutes before he got back to his feet. That’s a no-no and I’m sure the league will get involved. I will say that I liked the fire that the team showed after the hit, especially from Stevie Johnson, who seemed like he wanted a piece of Moore.
—My other concern is for the health of Johnny White. Oh, and while we are at it, what about Arthur Moats getting dinged up? Man, this is why preseason is such a waste of time, just too many guys getting hurt. Memo to the owners: Go find another way to make 200 million bucks or whatever these games cost. (Editor’s note: Gailey said none of the injuries are serious)
—What can I say? The starting offense looked terrible tonight. Fitzpatrick was erratic, the offensive line looked shaky, and the wide receivers didn’t seem to get separation from the Broncos corners. This is what you get when you try to be too pass happy. It worries me that Chan Gailey is going to get too cute this season by living and dying by the pass. I still think the team needs to be more of a power offense than trying to throw the ball 40-45 times. I just don’t think the line can hold up if Fitz is looking to pass that many times. As for Fitzpatrick, he was 6 of 17 for 44 yards and 1 interception. His pick wasn’t his fault, as Marcus Easley didn’t do his QB any favors. Even still, the offense didn’t look great tonight..but again..read my intro.
—Last thing on the offense, I have no clue what the offensive line rotation is today. I’m pretty sure Geoff Hangartner is getting his walking papers any day now, which I don’t really understand, because he’s better than Chad Rinehart and the other doofus. I don’t know why Andy Levitre is getting the run around. It’s funny, but no one said anything last week about his play, but once Gailey started to motivate him, all the critics started coming out. As for our left tackle, he’s a mess right now. Demetrius Bell had a hard time with the speed rushing of the Denver pass rushers and it just looked like a case of man against boy. And this is suppose to be the guy that we can’t lose to injury!? Anyways, the line is a mess.
—Marcell Dareus is a beast! I have a feeling I’ll be saying that a lot this year. He’s definitely going to be fun to watch this year. I know the guy was big, but his quickness is what really gets me. Did you see his sack? He kept fighting through a double team, and was able to collapse the pocket and get to the QB. I’m not sure how many sacks he’ll get this year, as a lot of people have pegged him between 6-8 sacks, but he’s showing that he has ability to rush the passer.
—At least Tyler Thigpen looked better than last week. I still think he will find his way with being a decent back-up. If anyone gets affected by a lockout, you gotta think it’s the back-up QB, because they don’t throw all that much during the regular season and need the OTA’s.
—Want to know who has the advantage in getting more carries, CJ Spiller or Fred Jackson? Well, Tim Graham has the answer: Hearing more and more Bills top RB job is C.J. Spiller’s to lose, not Fred Jackson’s. That doesn’t really surprise me, as Spiller is Gailey/Nix’s guy. It makes sense, mainly because he’s a 1st round pick and you need to give him every opportunity to flourish. As for tonight, you can tell the Bills are really trying to get Spiller involved, as he touched the ball 8 times (6 rushes and 2 catches), but averaged only 2-yards per touch. As for Jackson, he had four carries for 34 yards, with his longest run being 20-yards. Oh, and if I were an opposing linebacker, I’d be worried about Jackson doing a blitz pick-up. BANG!
—Leodis McKelvin…Same crap. Inconsistent and takes too many chances.
—As for the defense, they didn’t look great, but if you are going to crap on them, you better include how Shawne Merriman looked last week and incorporate his absence as being a factor. Then again, it’s only preseason
—OK, if you want some analysis, the defense played well against the run, holding Denver to just over 3-yards a carry, but Orton and yes, Brady Quinn, had their way with the Bills combining for 265 yards and two touchdowns. Yeah, that’s all I got..again, I hate preseason.
—Man, people on twitter are really angry about the Bills. You can’t bitch about the team without being told “It’s only preseason.” However, if the team scored 21 points, those same fans who crapped on you for going nuts, would be celebrating as if we won the preseason Super Bowl. Again, it’s only preseason.
—A fake punt in preseason? Sweet! Lets do it again for every exhibition game.
