The Bills signed hopefully the 2nd coming of Kordell Stewart (The 1995 version), with Brad Smith. I reached out to the Jets bloggers over at RexSanchez.com to see what their thoughts were on Smith. Enjoy.
1) What are his strengths and weaknesses?
It’s hard to define him in terms of strengths and weaknesses. He’s very average—in my opinion—at everything. Yeah, he’s a great kick returner, but many Jets fans think he excelled because of ST coach Westhoff’s system. The Jets always have good kick returners. It’s the system, not the players. I’d say his wide receiver skills are below average to average. His passing skills are hard to asses because the Jets rarely let him throw. He’s a good runner in terms of making his own space but he’s not exceptionally fast.
2) Smith seems to catch, throw and run. Which three does he do better?
Run.
3) How many times should he touch the ball in a game?
I always felt the Jets should let him throw more. I think that’s why the Wildcat became less effective last season…they always ran it; they barely ever passed and teams would put 8 in the box when he was under center. Since I don’t feel you guys have a legit No. 1 QB, I think Smith should get more touches than he should with other teams. I’d say 4-5 runs, 1-2 passes thrown and target him as a WR on 3rd downs.
4) What was your favorite Smith game-changing moment?
Smith hit Jerricho Cotchery on a big 45-yard pass play in the AFC Championship Game vs. Indy in ’09. The Jets took a 14-6 lead a few plays later. (Yeah, let him throw it once in a while. He’s not the best passer but the element of surprise works.
5) How big of a part was he in the Jets offense?
A minimal part. He was fare more effective in ’09 than ’10. I think the Wildcat wore out its welcome with the Jets. He was great as a kick returner but with the new rules I think he would have been useless for the Jets in ’11.
